Urban Gleaners helps alleviate hunger by collecting edible, surplus food and distributing it to agencies that feed the hungry.

Family Fun continues Sunday from 1:00 pm – 3:00 pm with the Scariest Scarecrow Building Contest where imaginations run wild to keep those Halloween ghosts away.

Giving: In the spirit of harvesting the last of the season’s bounty, we are reaching out to the community to bring their excess produce from their gardens (plus any canned goods) to The Colony throughout the weekend to benefit Urban Gleaners.

The solution? Request these off-menu items that totally do exist, giving you the best of both worlds” …

THE COLONY, in St. Johns, used to be a funeral home, then a New Age church. Dayna McErlean is reinventing it as a … let’s see:

The ballroom rents out for weddings, parties, whatever. Cooks can rent the kitchen by the hour. (“There’s huge need,” McErlean says. “There are so many food start-ups in Portland.”) Two stylishly retro suites serve as a miniature hostel. And  if their drink list doesn’t blow your mind, make sure you still have a pulse…”

My Houzz: Mixed-Use Oregon Home Serves and Charms

Dayna McErlean’s seven-year remodeling project transformed a debilitated Portland, Oregon, building into a vibrant multiuse project. Drawing on her childhood and inspired by her hands-on, creative family, McErlean created four dynamic spaces — the Yakuza Lounge (a food lover’s Japanese pub), an upstairs living space, a gorgeous garden and deck area, and a cabin for rent. Working with a carefully chosen team of building consultants, McErlean also incorporated a green roof and a water reclamation system. Now, nearly a decade later, her converted home in the city’s Alberta Arts District, is at the heart of a thriving creative community.
